Roads - street lighting
The maintenance of Street Lighting, Illuminated traffic signs, Illuminated bollards and associated equipment is carried out by the County Council. The County Council are responsible for the majority of street lighting within the County.
The County Councils Term maintenance Consultant (Mouchel) have a Street Lighting team who are responsible for ensuring the maintenance of the County Councils existing street lighting and illuminated traffic signs stock, they also design new street lighting installations and approve the designs of developers for new housing estates.
Within the County there are currently over 40,000 street lights and illuminated signs. Street lighting is something many people take for granted but it is very important to us. It reduces the likelihood of road traffic accidents for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicle users. It also increases the safety of our environment and property by reducing crime and vandalism.
The County Council is currently reviewing its street lighting policy. This review will ensure the policy addresses the current issues with reference to the provision of street lighting. The County Council already considers the issue of light pollution as serious and as such endeavors to eliminate this where ever possible across the county by installing suitable equipment. When ever new lighting is installed or existing lighting upgraded/replaced the following issues are considered;
