Car Crime

Motor Crime

More people in the UK are affected by motor crime than any other form of criminal activity. It accounts for over a quarter of all recorded crime in the UK and costs a staggering £3 billion a year.

Put the brakes on motor crime

If you hear something about a crime, or know someone involved in crime, do you tend to think "it's nothing to do with me"? Or do you want to help the police?

It's understandable that many people don't want to get involved, for all sorts of reasons. But there is something you can do about motor crime, or any other criminal activity you know about, completely anonymously, without risk and without getting involved. Call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Reduce the risk of theft from a vehicle

Follow the advice:

Older vehicles are more likely to be targeted as they don't have the built-in security of modern ones.

  • Don't leave any possessions on view in your car, take them with you or lock them in the boot.
  • Particularly at risk are luggage, mobile phones and electronic games and equipment. Thieves also consider the contents of coat and jacket pockets, parcels, envelopes and carrier bags.
  • Documents, cheque books, credit cards - don't leave them, not even in the glove compartment to be found and mis-used - take them with you.
  • Lock your doors and, if you have one, use your alarm every time you leave your vehicle.

Notices are available from the Council stating "Nothing Valuable has been left in this car" - call into reception or contact Ishti Turner, Community Safety Officer on 01225 776655 or e-mail communitysafety@westwiltshire.gov.uk.
