What we do

It is impossible to predict the nature of every sort of incident that could occur and result in an emergency situation, but the Council will provide the following assistance as required:

Emergency accommodation, in the event of the need to evacuate people. This may include

  • People made homeless in the short term or permanently
  • Relatives visiting the area
  • Helpers drafted in to the area to assist with the situation
  • Management of a Rest Centre, should the situation and numbers involved warrant opening one.
  • Liaison with local communities affected by the situation.

Control of environmental pollution, such as spillages, leakages and contamination.

Public health advice.

Provision of equipment to assist in carrying out immediate repairs and maintenance of essential services.

Provision of sandbags.

Waste management, including

Cleansing and sanitation

Road clearance and rubble clearance from damaged buildings

Inspection of damaged buildings to ensure they are safe.

Liaison and support to Utility companies in order to restore services.

Animal welfare.
