Historic Buildings and Areas grants

What the scheme is intended for?

The primary purpose is to encourage owners to repair listed buildings, which are on the Council's Buildings at Risk Register. This can be viewed by following the "Buildings at Risk" link at the foot of this page.

Eligible works fall into two categories:

1. Repair works to 'buildings at risk', and

2. Minor works that improve Historic Areas, including:

  • Conservation Areas
  • Setting of a Church or group of listed buildings

These projects tend to be minor due to the limitations to the budget - although a proportion of the overall budget will be ring-fenced specifically for these projects. Application forms are available from the Planning Policy and Conservation Section.

Allocating priority for Historic Buildings.

Due to financial constraints there has to be a mechanism for allocating priority. For example applications for grants will be assessed against various criteria including: the condition of the building and the nature and urgency of the repairs; the grade of the building (I , II* , II); the prominence of the building’s location.

Other possible sources of funding.

Town Councils may also be able to fund a scheme within their areas. Where an application falls within the boundaries of one of the five town centre conservation areas, it will automatically be taken to the Partnership Panel for consideration by the town as well as the District.

It should be noted that not all the towns have a specific budget to assist this type of application.

Allocation for Historic Areas Grants.

A separate grant budget will be available for grant assistance towards minor enhancement works within the towns and villages in the District. There will be no upper limit of grant aid as each scheme will be considered on its merits and awarded a grant depending on the necessity of the scheme and the urgency of the work. Both towns and parishes will be contacted in order to invite bids for this funding.
