Planning

The local authority decides on the use to which local land can be put in accordance with their economic, planning and environmental strategies. Any proposals for change in use of land have to be approved by the local planning department.

West Wiltshire is subject to continuing development pressure. A balance often has to be struck in planning between the demand for new development and the need to protect the character of our towns, villages and countryside.

The Council's task is to make planning decisions in the interests of the community at large. It guides development to the most appropriate places and ensures that the design, appearance and layout of proposals are suitable for their surroundings. Quite often positive development proposals can bring with them beneficial change, such as a better environment, more local jobs, or wider housing opportunities.

We always welcome comments from the public on development proposals, as well as planning matters generally. Visitors to the planning office can look at the development plan and details of any submitted planning application. There is always somebody on hand to offer advice on particular proposals, however we regret that for the next few weeks we are unable to have a duty officer available during the afternoon. Planning Information Officers will be available all day but a duty officer will be available only up to 1.00pm.
