Country Walks - Tips and Safety

Tips for walking:

  • Dress appropriately for the weather
  • Wear suitable supportive footwear
  • Start each walk slowly, gradually building up speed
  • Slow the walk down at the end
  • Choose a suitable walk
  • Walk to increase breathing, but not to exhaust
  • Do not eat a heavy meal before walking
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Do not walk if you feel unwell

Prior to undertaking any of the health walks, you are advised to consult your GP.

Safety tips:

  • Always tell someone when and where you're going to walk
  • Make sure you take the route map with you
  • Wear reflective clothing if walking in the dark
  • If walking on the road, face the oncoming traffic
  • Keep to the footpath when crossing farmland
  • Take care crossing roads
  • Avoid walking alone
