Side waste

Side waste

Sending all refuse to landfill is no longer an option, as available space is running out and the impact on the environment is proven. By reducing the number of non-recyclable items purchased, reusing items and recycling everything possible, everyone can make a difference.

Under section 46 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, West Wiltshire can stipulate the size, construction and maintenance of the receptacles used for presenting waste. Therefore, in order to ensure your bin is collected, you must only present your bin out for collection. Any waste that is left next to or on top of your full bin is classed as side waste, which this Council will not collect. Furthermore, bins must not be filled to overflowing - the bin lid should be shut for your waste to be collected. If your bin lid is vertically propped open, it will not be collected. Please also be aware that heavy bins cannot be collected.

If you are struggling with the capacity of your bin, there are several ways that the Council can help.

The black box scheme enables kerbside recycling. Please see the Recycling - kerbside collections page for more information. These black boxes are provided free of charge and each household is entitled to up to two black boxes. Please contact Hills Waste on 0845 6032085 to order a black box.

The Household Recycling Centres accept recyclable material and all your household items including domestic waste. There are also many mini recycling centres located conveniently throughout the district.

We can provide information on home composting, real nappies, and advise on minimising waste on our Tips for recycling page and through SMART shopping. Please contact us for further information.

If you are recycling but still struggling with the capacity of your bin, please contact us on 01225 776655 or e-mail recycling@westwiltshire.gov.uk for advice and a Waste and Recycling Officer will assess your eligibility for a larger bin.
