What goes where?

FAQs about green bins and black boxes

Black kerbside box

  • Newspapers, magazines, catalogues, junk mail and white printer paper (not shredded paper)
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • All steel and aluminium food & drinks cans
  • Textiles, clothes, pairs of shoes, belts, handbags and blankets
  • Clean aluminium foil, such as yoghurt tops, takeaway food containers etc

Green wheeled Bin

  • Garden waste - grass cuttings, leaves, prunings, hedge clippings etc
  • Shop-bought cut flowers
  • Woodshavings and untreated sawdust

Grey wheeled Bin

  • Anything that can't be recycled - meat, fish, cooked food waste
  • Disposable nappies
  • Waxed milk/juice containers

One major concern expressed by residents has been about fear of smells coming from the bins during the two-week cycle. It is recommended that cooked food waste, nappies etc placed into the grey bin should be well wrapped in a plastic carrier bag or paper to reduce smell.

Some residents have also been worried about the risk of disease - unless there is already a disease in the community, nothing can be spread by rubbish. Normal hygiene measures are perfectly adequate as a preventative measure.

There is a telephone helpline for anyone with queries or concerns about the recycling schemes - available 8.30am - 5.30pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30am to 5pm - just call 01225 776655. Alternatively you can email recycling@westwiltshire.gov.uk
