Making things last longer

When shopping, choose items that are more durable and last longer. Some examples are:

  • Re-using carrier bags – many stores sell more durable ‘bags for life’ for a minimal sum and some shops replace them for free when they have worn out.
  • Rechargeable batteries can be used over and over again.
  • Low energy light bulbs last longer than conventional light bulbs and use less energy
  • Buy clothes that are likely to remain in fashion longer.
  • Shoes can be taken to the cobblers for repairs that will extend their life dramatically.
  • Clothes can often be repaired with simple sewing jobs.
  • Furniture and appliances can often be repaired or refurbished to help extend their life.
  • If you are unsure what to buy someone as a gift, consider buying gift vouchers instead of a present which may end up being unwanted and thrown away.
