Sustainable living was the theme of The Mead Primary School’s very successful school fair on Saturday.
West Wiltshire District Council’s recycling officer attended the event with the Waste Warrior from Hills Waste Solutions to answer waste and recycling queries and challenge pupils to take part in the Time Waster Trial.
Dozens of children took up the challenge to test their speed and dexterity by using a litter picker to sort out the items you can recycle in your black box in the fastest time possible. The winner was Ellie Nickerson, from Foxes class at The Mead. She correctly put items such as a pair of trainers, coffee jar and empty deodorant can in the black box for recycling at the kerbside in an impressive 17 seconds. She won a can crusher for her efforts.
Councillor Linda Conley, District Council portfolio holder for the environment, said: “Our education and promotion team are working closely with the local community through events such as this. This event has demonstrated that children are aware of the impact we have on the environment and its future, and actively use their recycling facilities at home. Well done Ellie for being an excellent recycler!”
