Legislation was introduced in 2000, known as the Pollution Prevention and Control (England & Wales) Regulations 2000.This has now been replaced by The Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2007. Processes are issued with a Permit and when they are inspected to assess compliance with their Permit conditions they are also given a risk rating of high, medium or low. The legislation has also brought more processes under regulatory control.
More information about The Environmental Permitting (England & Wales) Regulations 2007 is available on the Defra website at www.defra.gov.uk/environment/ppc/index.htm (page will open in a new window).
