Bonfires - Helpful Tips

Bonfires

Helpful Tips

The following tips may be of help to both complainants and the person being complained of:

Show Tolerance

The law of nuisance refers to the expression "reasonable behaviour". This applies to all parties; for example, your neighbour may be a keen gardener and enjoy an occasional bonfire to destroy weeds which are not suitable for composting. Conversely, why not check with your neighbour first to check they don't mind.

Washing Day

First look to see if your neighbour has their washing out, or if they are in their garden.

Dark or Black Smoke

Do not burn plastics, paint, carpets, rubber or roofing felt. These types of substances may emit harmful gases or particulates.

Compost

Many people make compost at home and it is definitely better for the wider environment than sending waste to landfill. To avoid this problem and still make good compost remember these techniques:

  • Buy a solid walled composter or make a bin with solid wood sides;
  • Place it on a base made from old paving slabs with a gap of less that one inch (25mm) but more than 0.5 inch (15mm). This will leave enough drainage and airflow space without allowing access to undesirable pests.
  • Do not put meat or fish scraps in your compost as this may attract rats;
  • Do not put cat/ dog faeces in your compost unless you can leave it for a year before use. (This is how long before any worm eggs are sure to be destroyed). Straw and droppings from vegetarian pets (eg. rabbits/ gerbils) is OK.
