The Bonfire Code

Before you light a bonfire, stop, think and

Observe the Bonfire Code

Don't burn plastics, paint, rubber or roofing felt as all may emit harmful substances, and it is an offence to cause the emission of dark/ black smoke;

Don't light bonfires on days when people are likely to be using their gardens or hanging out washing. We recommend that bonfires are restricted to the evenings (after 6pm);

Only burn garden waste if it is dry. Garden waste can also be composted or taken to a household waste recycling centre.

Don't leave bonfires to burn unattended and don't bank them up overnight;

Keep a water supply or fire extinguisher close at hand;

Site the bonfire as far away as possible from neighbouring houses and think about the wind direction;

Bulky household rubbish can be collected by the Council instead of being burnt;

Also remember to make use of the Council's recycling facilities such as paper, bottle and clothes banks.
