Air Quality Monitoring Sites

Air Quality Monitoring Sites

We set air quality emission targets and permit certain industrial processes.

Air Quality in the district is monitored to ensure compliance with the National Air Quality Strategy. An Air Quality Action Plan has been developed and was submitted to Defra in September 2005 for the Air Quality Management Areas of Bradford on Avon and Westbury, in conjunction with Wiltshire County Council. Progress on the Action Plan is also reported to defra on an annual basis.

Air Quality Monitoring in the West Wiltshire District

There are currently 2 automatic monitoring sites within the district. They are both kerbside locations within Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs). In Westbury, Oval Motors offices, Warminster Road a nitrogen dioxide monitor is housed. Map of automatic analyser, Westbury (PDF file, opens in new window). We have ceased monitoring for sulphur dioxide and particulate matter in Westbury due to the low levels. In Bradford On Avon a nitrogen dioxide monitor is housed in the cellar of Mr Salvats Coffee Shop, St Margarets Street. Map of automatic analyser, Bradford On Avon.(PDF file, opens in new window).

Monitoring has been undertaken in Warminster Road, Westbury since 1999. Our most recently acquired analyser is housed in St Margarets Street, Bradford On Avon which became operational in August 2003.

This analyser used to be housed outside the public toiletsin Warinster Road but was moved in the summer of 2003 as the current location was felt to be more representative of a kerb side location near to residential properties. The AQMA has been declared for not meeting NO2 air quality objectives. The analyser is there to confirm or refute this prediction.

This is the newest of our analysers and was brought into commission in August 2003. Thanks to the co-operation of Mr Salvat we have been able to house the analyser in the cellar of his coffee shop. Due to the narrow streets and pavements in Bradford on Avon it is not possible to locate a roadside enclosure. At this particular location we are also running a co-location study with nitrogen dioxide diffusion tubes.
