Works to Trees

Trees protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)

A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is an order made by the Council to protect a tree or trees for the public's enjoyment. In general, a TPO makes it an offence to cut down, top, lop, uproot or wilfully destroy a tree.

If a tree is protected by a TPO you will need to apply for permission to carry out any works to it or you could be fined up to £20,000.

If a tree is the subject of a TPO this does not mean the Council is responsible for looking after it. The owner remains responsible for the trees, their condition and any damage they may cause.  If a tree is dangerous the Council will recommend an appropriate course of action.

If you are unsure whether a tree is protected by a TPO please contact the Development Control section on 01225 776655 during normal office hours.

Trees in Conservation Areas

Trees in conservation areas are automatically protected and you will need permission to carry out any works.  After a form has been submitted the Council has 6 weeks to decide if the tree is worthy of a Tree Preservation Order (TPO).

If you are unsure whether you live in a Conservation Area or require more information regarding trees, please contact the Development Control section during normal office hours on 01225 776655, or read more on this website about trees.
