Who Deals With Unauthorised Camping?

The Police, the County Council and us as, the District Council, may all be involved with situations involving unauthorised camping by travellers and/or gypsies where vehicles, caravans or trailers are involved.

The Police can direct trespassers to leave if:

  • Damage has been caused to the land or to property.
  • Threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour has been used towards the owner or occupier of the land.
  • There are more than six vehicles on the land.

The County Council will deal with encampments on their land, for example, highways and by-ways.

West Wiltshire District Council will deal with encampments on land owned by us or privately owned land.
