In recent years there has been a significant change relating to property controlled by the District Council. In April 2001 the whole of the Council's housing stock was transferred to West Wiltshire Housing Society (now called Selwood Housing) and at the same time the Council's 8 main Sports Centres/ Swimming Pools were placed under the management of DC Leisure Management Ltd. Both these changes were driven by the fact that the respective new owners and managers would be able to source funding to properly maintain and enhance the housing stock and leisure facilities.
The main public hall in each of the District's 5 towns has also been transferred to the local Town Council. Property remaining with the Council comprises, in the main, Parks, Recreation Grounds, Play Areas, Cemeteries, Allotments and some Commercial Property. Apart from Commercial Property; the day to day management and maintenance of the other areas is undertaken by the Council's Operations department (telephone 01225 770385) although any requests to purchase Council land should be referred to Technical Services (01225 770341).
Information on Council owned garages
The Council receives numerous requests from residents to purchase areas of Public Open Space that adjoin their garden. This may be to provide space to extend their property or simply provide a larger garden. Because of the way Public Open Space came into Council ownership it would be exceptional for the Council to sanction such areas being depleted by piecemeal sale. Even where the Council might be minded to sell, the process is complex and expensive for the prospective purchaser. Further details can be obtained from Technical Services - telephone 01225 770341.
We can assist with requests about ownership of land, please visit the land ownership enquiry page.
