Smoke free legislation - vehicles

Smokefree legislation

How the law affect vehicles

The new law covers any vehicle used to transport the public, even if they don’t pay to use them - so buses, taxis, trains, minibuses etc.

Work vehicles used by more than one person, even if they do so at different times, are also affected - so pool cars, works vans, lorries etc.

The law requires such vehicles to be smokefree at all times, so that anyone travelling in them can be sure that they are safe from secondhand smoke. So taxi drivers won’t be able to smoke in their vehicle even when they’re not working.

Smokefree legislation will not apply to vehicles that are used primarily for private rather than work purposes. Smoking will be permitted in vehicles that are for the sole use of the driver and are not used by anyone else, either as a driver or passenger.
