These pages are designed to help you understand the implications of the new Smokefree law, which comes into effect on 1 July.
Smokefree is there to protect people from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke, both in the workplace and in other public places.
For employers, Smokefree isn’t just about stopping people from smoking on your premises - you may have to think about getting planning permission for a smoking shelter, making sure smoking outside doesn’t lead to litter problems, or ensuring that people smoking outside doesn’t disturb others.
We have produced a guide for employers and also a general guide for the public on the new smokefree legislation.
We have also produced a guidance leaflet about planning for those businesses who wish to provide smoking shelters and other provision for smokers. All these leaflets are in PDF format and will open in a new window.
