‘Amusement with Prizes’ (AWP) Gaming machine permits on premises with a drinks licence were previously issued by the magistrates court. AWP permits on non-licensed premises such as cafes and amusement arcades are issued by the district councils.
The Licensing Act 2003 has changed this so that district councils now issue all AWP permits, as the magistrates will no longer have a licensing function.
The system for applying for a permit and the criteria for granting one remains the same; the only difference will be where you need to apply to get one. All existing licences will remain in force until they expire.
The new Gaming Act is expected to change the licensing arrangements for gaming machines some time in 2007.
