Local Agenda 21 strategy - the Council's role

To develop a local strategy for ‘sustainable development’ in consultation with the community.

Local Agenda 21 strategy - what we do

Residents and employers where consulted in 1996-98 to identify what sustainable development means to people in West Wiltshire and what are the priority areas for action in the future . From this exercise a local strategy for sustainable development was produced detailing the key principles, objectives and actions which the community felt where of greatest importance for adoption by the community and the Council.

Over the next year we will be reviewing the strategy and deciding how best to support its further implementation. We have produced a booklet about our Local Agenda 21 Strategy which is available here in PDF format. (File opens in a new window.)

Local Agenda 21 Strategy - why we do it

‘Sustainable development’ is about protecting and improving quality of life now and for future generations. It recognises the importance of balancing social, economic and environmental issues, to ensure we meet today’s needs without compromising those of future generations.

At the first world summit on ‘sustainable development’ in Rio, the UK government signed up to a document called Agenda 21 (a ‘sustainable development’ agenda for the 21st century’), detailing things we would need to do globally to protect the environment and society for the future.

Local authorities were identified as being in a key position to lead the process of developing a Local ‘Agenda 21’ or a sustainable development strategy for the local area involving the local community in its development and implementation.
