The district contains almost 4,000 listed buildings, which reflects the historic nature of its settlements and landscape. These are published on the Statutory Register of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. These registers are managed by the Department of Culture Media and Sport.
Some of these buildings are of great national importance, and all are considered to be of special architectural or historic interest. Internal or external alterations, which affect the character of a listed building, require written consent from the Council before they can take place. There is a presumption against the demolition of Listed Buildings and penalties exist for undertaking work to a listed building without consent.
Owners of listed buildings have a responsibility to keep them properly maintained, and the Council has a power to act to ensure the preservation of a building if this is not being done. Click here for a guide on Listed Buildings.
Historic Listed Buildings make a vital contribution to the life, appearance and character of the District, and the Council is committed to ensuring that this is maintained. Click here for contact information regarding historic buildings at risk.
