Standards Committee

The standards committee, which was established in 2001, promotes and maintains high standards of conduct by all parish, town and district councillors in West Wiltshire.

The committee is unusual because it involves members of the public, as well as town/parish council representatives and district councillors. To view the members of the Standards committee please visit the committee membership page.

The committee meets six times a year, and its workload includes:

  • Considering the impact of the Code of Conduct on parish, town and district councillors
  • Advising the District Council and parish/town councils on how to adopt and revise protocols
  • Considering complaints about parish, town and district councillors
  • Making recommendations to the District Council on standards or probity within the authority
  • Making recommendations on members’ allowances, following reports from independent remuneration panels

As part of the Code of Conduct, we have established a comprehensive register of members’ interests for the District Council and all parish/town councils. Despite some initial controversy, every councillor in the district is now registered, and the record can be seen at the District Council offices.
