Staying Healthy
Health experts recommend that everyone should be moderately active for at least 30 minutes, five days a week.
West Wiltshire has a wide range of leisure facilities, from swimming pools and gyms to keep-fit classes. If the gym isn't for you, have you considered cycling or walking? The main leisure section provides information on sport, physical activity and ways to get active in the district. The Council has also developed a series of walking routes around West Wiltshire. A tan is seen as a sign of good health, but it’s actually a sign of skin damage. Everyone should take care, but people with fair or freckled skin who burn easily and tan with difficulty are most at risk of developing skin cancer - and that’s 46% of the population.
Children are especially at risk of getting sun burnt, and the damage caused can have long term effects as it increases the chance of developing skin cancer.
That's not to say you shouldn’t go out in the sun, but think about the risks and take a few simple precautions to protect yourself.
To reduce the danger of damaging your skin, you should:
- Take care not to burn - just because it’s a bit cloudy or there’s a breeze doesn’t mean the sun is any less intense
- Cover up - wear loose clothing, a hat and good quality sunglasses
- Stay in the shade - especially between 11am and 3pm, which is the hottest part of the day
- Apply sunscreen - and be generous. Use a cream with at least sun protection factor 15 and don’t forget to reapply regularly, particularly if you go swimming
