Stop - Most people who call at your door are genuine but some are not. They could be thieves or conmen trying to trick their way into your home to steal. Bogus callers will pretend to an authentic - such as officials from the council, gas or electricity or water companies, or say they are workmen needing to make repairs, or even claim to be police officers. Bogus callers are convincing liars and anyone can be taken in by them. Whether it's a child asking for a glass of water or someone offering to tarmac your drive, never let them in unless you are sure they are genuine.
Chain - Genuine visitors will usually make an appointment, so you should be wary if someone turns up unexpectedly. When someone calls at your home make sure you take a good look at them through the window or by using the door viewer. Always put on the door chain or bar before you open the door and keep it on while you are talking. Don't feel embarrassed about using a door chain, a genuine visitor will not be offended and will expect you to take precautions. If you don't have a door chain fitted, get one. They don't cost much - contact the local police helpdesk for advice - tel 01380 735735.
Check - Always ask for proof of identity and check it carefully, keeping the chain on the door. Genuine callers will carry identification with their photograph and details of their business. Don't assume a caller is genuine just because they are wearing a uniform or clothing with a logo or badge. Always ask to see an ID card. Take your time to check the identification. If the caller is unexpected, ring their office to confirm identity, but always use the number in the phone book rather than the number on the card. If in doubt keep them out.
If you think a bogus caller has deceived you, don't feel ashamed or embarrassed - they are convincing liars and anyone can be misled. Make sure no-one else becomes a victim by telling the police about what has happened to you.
The Call a Friend scheme aims to reduce the risk of bogus callers and "distraction burglaries" to elderly/ vulnerable people. The scheme is simple: the number of a relative, friend or neighbour is written on a card, to be called if a stranger is on the doorstep, even if they have identification.
It explains that the door must not be opened until the friend arrives - a genuine caller will be happy to wait or call back later.
If the friend is not available, the card also carries a 24 hour police contact number that you can call for advice. Making that call puts a distance between you and the visitor, reducing the risk that you feel you must open the door and let the person in. It also send a clear message that unexpected visitors will be checked out.
If you would like a "Call a Friend" card, to find out more, or if you know of anyone who should be told about the scheme, please contact Ishti Turner, Community Safety Officer, on 01225 770338 or e-mail communitysafety@westwiltshire.gov.uk
