Farmers' Markets

Wiltshire Farmers Markets

What’s it all about?

Wiltshire Farmers' Markets are still the best known source of local products in Wiltshire. They have a distinct and special identity as markets where:

  • Produce comes from within a defined local area.
  • Stallholders are the farmers, growers or producers themselves.
  • All products have been grown, reared or processed by the stallholders.

Local / own produce

All produce should originate from within a 40 mile radius of the individual markets.

At the discretion of the Board, the radius can be extended where exceptional circumstances prevail e.g. the product is unavailable from within the 40 mile radius.

As vacancies within existing markets, or new markets, arise, priority will be given to those producers who are most local to that market

  • Produce should originate from the producer's holding or premises. Specifically:
  • Meat: at least 50% of the animal's life should be at the producer's holding
  • Vegetables: all produce should be grown within the defined radius
  • Fish: to be allowed at the discretion of the Board
  • Eggs: to be produced on a holding within the defined radius from the producer's own flock
  • Dairy and other processed foods including cakes and preserves: food should be processed within the defined area and 50% of ingredients should be sourced locally where practicable. For cakes – no commercial mixes should be used, and all ingredients should be listed.
  • Drinks: all ingredients should be sourced locally where practicable
  • Plants: should be grown or propagated on producer's premises. Emphasis should be on food plants

Principal Producer

The stall shall be operated by the principal producer, someone who is involved in production, or a trained employee.

At the discretion of the board, producer co-operatives and community associations e.g. WI Markets and Allotment Societies may be accepted as principal producers.

Product Information

Information about products should be displayed clearly on the stall, and also be available to the public via an information stall where it exists.

Other Rules

All produce should adhere to the rules and regulations of the Food Hygiene (General) Regulations 1970 and the provisions of the Food Safety Act 1995.
