How the banding system works
Council Tax is charged on most domestic properties Each property belongs in one of eight bands, ranging from A to H
Properties are banded by the Valuation Office (part of the Inland Revenue) The band is based on the property's capital value as at 1st April 1991
You can search the online valuation list on the Valuation Office website to find out which band your property is in - (page opens in new window).
Capital values are arrived at by estimating the amount each property might have been sold for on the open market, subject to certain assumptions.
Assumptions used in the valuation are that:
- The sale was with vacant possession
- Houses were sold freehold
- Flats were sold on 99-year leases
- The property was in reasonable repair
The size, layout and character of the property and the physical state of the locality are same as they were on 1 April 1993
